About Nicky
Nicky graduated from Auckland Medical School in 1992, and the Waikato Centre for Herbal Studies in 1996. She also has an Advanced Certificate in Natural Fertility Management. For ten years she worked as a General Practitioner and Medical Herbalist in Tauranga, expanding to include a Natural Fertility Clinic in 2002. She is Medical Director of the International College of Herbal Medicine.
Nicky extended her studies in Mind Body Medicine in the United States in 2004. She also completed a Diploma in Integrative Psychology (Hakomi) in 2008, a form of Mind Body psychotherapy.
She now practises Integrative Medicine from The Herbal Health Centre in Ponsonby, Auckland, integrating complementary approaches with her conventional medical training to offer a holistic health service.
Who Could Benefit?
At the core of her practice is the belief that embracing and exploring all aspects of health is essential for optimal wellbeing. This means looking more deeply at factors that may be affecting health, be they of a physical, emotional, mental, environmental or spiritual nature.
Anyone facing health challenges can benefit from this approach, and also those wanting to maintain or optimise their health. The areas Nicky specialises in are outlined below.
Herbal Medicine today is both a science and an art. Modern research is combining with traditional knowledge to confirm and expand safe and effective guidelines for the use of plants as medicine. Herbal medicine is increasingly making its mark as a valid treatment option for a range of conditions including:
Women’s health, child health, cancer, auto-immune conditions, migraines, menopause, prostate problems, depression, anxiety, insomnia, asthma, eczema, chronic lung disease, bowel disorders, heart disease, recurrent infections, chronic fatigue and disease prevention.
Nicky has a special interest in supporting people with cancer, both during conventional cancer treatments, and afterwards to support optimal health and wellbeing.
Natural Fertility Management is a comprehensive programme using nutritional and herbal medicines, detoxification, stress management and timing techniques. This programme encompasses preconception care, conscious conception, overcoming fertility problems and optimising reproductive health.
Mind Body Medicine explores the relationship between our thoughts, our feelings, our bodies and our health. These inseparable aspects have a profound effect on how we respond to the challenges that life offers us.
Nicky has trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mind Body psychotherapy (Hakomi). These approaches use mindful awareness to explore body, mind and heart, and help build a more fulfilling and conscious life.
Mindful awareness is beneficial to every person, but particularly so for those suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, grief, chronic pain or chronic illness.
Conventional Medicine has many strengths. It is these strengths Nicky draws upon in her natural health practice – diagnosis, medical tests, safety issues, knowledge of drugs and their interactions, and referral when appropriate. The holistic way in which Nicky works is at all times informed and guided by her extensive experience within the medical system including her many years working as a GP.
